Monique Doyle Spencer, inimitable as always, uses the Red Sox mania of the moment to dismember a habit that is so--what word to choose--DISGUSTING. Yet, being Monique, she manages to do it in a most entertaining way in today's Boston Globe, where her humor column has become a regular feature:
"Chewing tobacco and baseball go together like movies and popcorn," people will say. "It's tradition!" I like that argument very much, so let's renew all of the traditions that go way back in baseball. Tickets will be 50 cents. There will be no games on Sundays. Men? You will be dressed in suits and ties and hats. Ladies? You'll have special days when you can go for free. Guess what? It was also against the rules for players to be paid. Tradition!
